The ON BEING CHRISTIAN Podcast
provides weekly episodes of Bible centered, Christ honoring messages for encouragement and edification of Christians.
Being a Christian isn’t about what you label yourself as, it’s about your relationship with Christ and how that relationship motivates you to live for the cause of Christ.
080 | Obedience
In many ways we tend to look for reasons to make things more difficult than they really are, it’s one of the ways we attempt to make ourselves feel better about not taking immediate action (we say we’re “deliberating” or “thinking about it”). This episode attempts to put all of that nonsense aside. Here’s the simple reality from the Word of God when it comes to obedience - either you are obedient, or you’re not. There is no grey area… choose wisely.
079 | The False Prophet
In our society, we like to try to convince ourselves that there are "styles of truth" or grey areas, between the truth and the lies. When it comes to those who tell you about God, there are Preachers of God's Word (those who preach the truth), and there are False Prophets (which is literally everyone else). My prayer for you is that you listen to what God says about Himself in His Word, as opposed to the personal take on God that some man tries to sell you.
078 | The Provoking Father
This episode is about the influence of a father. A father (however active or involved in his children's life, he may or may not be), will have a negative influence or a positive influence. It is impossible for him to have no influence. We will use the Word of God to show the stark differences in the two types of influence that a father may have, and how you personally can have the most positive influence in your children's lives.
077 | The Devouring Mother
This episode is about the damage that can be done when the one who should be protecting you and advocating and preparing for your future success, instead advocates and prepares for their own personal continued success, because of an unbiblical and consuming focus on their own self.
076 | The Price of Partial Service
So many of our life systems are set up from the perspective of what's called "risk management" - we purchase insurance to protect ourselves against the potential of loss, we form boundaries around our friend groups to keep people we don't want to interact with separate from us, we look for jobs based off benefit packages, and otherwise live life continually in the pursuit of what benefits us. If we're not careful, this "risk management" philosophy of life can seep into our relationship with Christ, and we then serve Him, only in so much, as we are still in control. This episode is about the Biblical truth of the fact that partial service to our God is exactly the same as not serving Him at all, and the price for rejecting God is indeed high.
075 | Awareness of Self
This is the final installment of our three-part series concerning Awareness. We've looked at Awareness of the Pastor, and the required Awareness of the Brethren (fellow Christians), now we're going to take a close look at perhaps the most difficult form of awareness -Awareness of Self. Not in keeping with what we think, but rather in keeping with the objective doctrine of the Word of God. It's often easier to see how others would benefit from a more vulnerable acceptance of the Word of God, but often it's far more difficult to let the Word of God show you who you really are, without making any excuses.
074 | Awareness of the Brethren
Continuing our look at 'Awareness', in this episode we’re talking about the 2nd thing - Awareness of the Brethren. Because of today's technology we all seem to be very aware of many things which have nothing to do with our duty to the Lord and our Christian walk. The Scripture lays out three relationships (relationship with the Man of God, relationship with fellow Christians, and our relationship with ourself), that we should be focused on; not according to our own agenda, but according to the Bible. Enjoy!
073 | Awareness of the Pastor
Over the course of the next 3 episodes, we're going to be looking at the concept of 'Awareness'. Specifically, three things that according to the Bible we should be very conscious of. This 1st episode is about awareness of the Pastor.
072 | When Christ is The Problem
This title may come across as provocative, but when we attempt to make ourself the solution, by our religion, our tradition, our concepts, our agenda, etc, then we do, through our lack of humility, make him the problem.
071 | Emmanuel
Who does the Bible say Emmanuel is? You might be surprised that the Biblical description of Emmanuel differs greatly, and often times in many ways, from the "religious" description. I'll take what the Bible says over culture anytime. Merry Christmas! I hope you have a wonderful holiday season. God Bless!
070 | Serving with Confidence
It has been said, and I believe it's true, that Christianity is in the middle of a "crisis of confidence". I believe that this is because Christianity, like many other things in today's culture has become incredibly self-serving. Confidence in Christian service comes from serving God from His perspective, for His purpose, and with the goal of the end result being beneficial to Him and not to ourselves.
069 | What Being Used by God Requires
It has been my desire of late, and my prayer to the Lord, to more effectively reach people as a witness and for the cause of Christ. But as is often the case, when I put the matter before the Lord, He sort of turned the tables on me, showing me first what must change within my own self before I could ever reach others for Him. That's what this episode is all about. I hope you find it helpful.
068 | The Purpose of Freedom
It has been said that the government of the United States is wholly inadequate for anything other than a just and moral people. Freedom is only a blessing when used from a moral position for moral purposes. Morality is from God, thus freedom must be used in the way that God designed. This episode is about the Biblically defined purpose of freedom.
067 | You Have Not Passed This Way Before
So much of our current culture is about doing everything you can to stay inside your comfort zone, but so much of the Biblical culture that we read in God’s Word is about God moving people outside their comfort zone, and asking them to trust Him with the results. There is a great section of Scripture in Joshua which shows us how we might be successful when the Lord asks us to do things we’ve never done before.
066 | Standing Before Kings
This is a short story that clearly puts forth two possible future outcomes, both directly related to the choices you choose to make today. One choice (the path of entitlement, victimization, and laziness) will put you before mean men. The other choice (the path of humility, personal responsibility, and diligence) will stand you before kings.
065 | The Burden of Captivity
Sometimes the very things that we surround ourselves with for comfort and assurance are the exact things that end up owning us, more than we end up owning them. This episode is about the things that separate us from the liberty found in a relationship with Christ, and how sometimes we mistakenly hold those things that separate us as precious.
064 | The Unchanging Will of God
We have a tendency to allow ourselves to be consumed with anxiety and worry over our own very temporary life systems and procedures. It would do us good to remember that God is on His throne and His will is unchanging. The question is - Am I in His will for those who obey? Or am I in His will for those who disobey?
063 | The Comfort of Righteousness
It would seem at times in our current culture that comfort, in many ways, has become the number one priority. Comfort for the Christian, according to the Bible, has little to nothing to do with culture and possessions, and everything to do with where we personally are with the Lord. This episode is about the comfort that righteous living brings to the Christian.
062 | Servants. Warriors. Kings.
There are three pretty common transitions in a person's life, as there are in the life of a Christian. We go from Servant, or as the Bible says, "little children", to Warriors, which the Bible describes as "young men", and from Warriors (if we learn our lessons correctly) we should transition to Kings, which the Bible calls "fathers". This episode shows us from the Bible the value of each one of these phases, and how transitioning from one to the next requires mastery of the proceeding stage before moving on.
061 | Have You Considered Him?
In today's society, especially with it being a rather contentious election year, we are being force fed many different viewpoints and opinions; we're being told that we have to understand and consider more content and information than could ever be consumed by one person, and all at the expense of forgoing consideration of Christ. Christ is not only worth considering, but He is increasingly becoming the only thing worth considering. Have you considered Him?
